Then I realized that there is no Reading Rainbow party stuff available for purchase. I buy party stuff whenever I can because I'm lazy. So I had to DIY this party, but you don't. Because I am giving you all of my printable stuff for free. YOU'RE WELCOME.
READING RAINBOW INVITATIONS
For the invites, I played on Levar's favourite phrase. I have generic versions that you can download and use for your own kids' parties, too. There is a version with little butterflies in the sky (earbug!), and a version with suns instead.
I want to say that I printed these nicely on cardstock, but I actually just emailed the jpegs to other parents.
READING RAINBOW CUPCAKE TOPPERS
I made two different cupcake toppers - one with rainbows, and one with Levar's head. In retrospect, I would not have used white cupcakes. This was too much white and not enough rainbow. But the toppers are awesome!
You can download both the rainbow and the Levar cupcake toppers here (for free).
I printed these onto cardstock and cut then out. You can leave them square or cut them into circles like I did. Then I just glued them onto lollipop sticks!
READING RAINBOW DECORATIONS
This was the easiest part. I went to the dollar store and bought a bunch of rainbow party decorations. Boom.
I did supplement them with the Reading Rainbow logo printed onto cardstock, and a "Welcome" sign featuring Lavar. You can also download those here.
In this photo from the party, you can see that most of the decorations are generic rainbow decorations - pale blue tablecloth, rainbow cups and plates, and paper rainbow decorations on the walls.
READING RAINBOW LOOT BAGS
I bought colourful paper bags at the dollar store and glued little decals on them that said, "You can go anywhere, you can be anything... So thanks for coming to our party!" You totally have the theme song in your head now, right?
Inside the loot bags, everyone (of course) got a book. They also got rainbow lollipops, a rainbow lei, a Reading Rainbow bookmark, and some "book worms."
Here's a close-up of the bookmark. Appreciate my efforts, people!
The loot bag decals, bookmarks, and book worm labels are also available to download for free.
Don't forget - you can download the Reading Rainbow app and buy lots of merchandise (but not party merchandise) on the Reading Rainbow website. As a librarian, a parent, AND a child of the 80s, I can't even tell you how happy I am that it's back.
Full disclosure: Sadly, no one gave me money to write this.
